3 May 2019

Each week I share the theme which is being explored by staff and students in school to give an opportunity for you to discuss this at home as a family with your child.
This week our theme is ‘Rule of Law’ and our whole school assembly on Wednesday was led by Mr Coombes.

His slides are copied below with a link to a TED talk by Kimberley Motley which he included.

Other activities on Wednesday included a full public exam briefing for Year 11 from Mr Berryman and a training session on Emotional Logic for Peer Mentors with Mrs Edwards which will support their work with Year 7 students.

eSafety Presentation

You will recall there was an eSafety event for parents last week when Ken Corish reminded us that being online is an extension of our usual environment and that we should treat our online friends with the same respect that we show to our friends and acquaintances when we are not online.

Mr Corish’s presentation is now available at the link below (please click on the forward arrow to view the Prezi presentation).

Oliver Pollard 7C

Congratulations also to Oliver who recently spent four days playing football for Callington Colts U12s in Callington’s twin town of Guipavas, France.

Oliver played in two formal matches against two U13 teams, winning 7 – 0 against Gousenou and drawing 3 – 3 against Coataudon FC by whom he was presented with their team’s pennant for Man of the Match. The team also took part in the Town Parade.

Callum Lyons 10N

On Sunday 28 April Drake Judo Club held their annual ‘Birthday Bash’ in Tavistock. This year the event included a team competition between club judoka from Devon and Cornwall. One girl and boy from each weight group was chosen to represent their county.

Well done to Callum who was chosen to captain the boys’ team. After a frantic set of determined fights the Devon boys came out on top by 70 points to 35. The Devon girls had a very close competition and narrowly won by 51 points to 50 points.

Callum also puts in many hours each week to help coach the younger club judoka at the Plymouth Life Centre and at the village hall in Sparkwell and is seen as a great role model.

Ten Tors Challenge 2019

Ten Tors training is officially done writes parent Mr Clifford. After many hundreds of miles walked, a few navigational deviations and a few more blisters our DHSB teams are now physically and mentally fit and ready for this year’s Ten Tors challenge.

Over the last six months students have been given navigational and survival skills that will remain with them for life and equip them well for the event. Not to mention leadership, communication, team working and resilience opportunities to add to their own skill set.

On behalf of the entire school and Ten Tors training team we wish our students well for this year’s event.

Many students also take part in the annual challenge with organisations outside school and we will publish a full report after the event.

Staff News

I’m pleased to let you know that Mr Quinlan has achieved his Level 1 Google Educator Award.

He said that this will enable him to fully use G Suite for Education in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning. For example, one of his Year 7 classes is creating a shared website which will be useful when they revise for their exams.
