8 February 2019

We had a busy day in the Learning Commons on Tuesday marking Safer Internet Day.
This year’s theme was all about the needs that young people have in navigating how to ask, give and receive permission online.

It is essential that we all see it as our responsibility to support young people to practically apply consent online. With this in mind, students were invited to the Learning Commons to have a conversation about the ways in which we can get consent, the data that is held on us and the importance of reading the terms and conditions. Students then made a pledge as to what they could do to, to ensure that they are taking control of their own and others personal data.

We also streamed various informational videos about data and rights onto the screens in Refuel.

For more information and to read the full report please visit the Safer Internet Page. There are also great videos for students and parents at the BBC Own It Website.

Senior Maths Team Challenge

Very well done to the senior team who were in London on Tuesday after being invited to compete at the national finals. Although we didn’t make it through to the top three teams, the students had a very good day and can be pleased that their invitation places them in the top 5% of all schools.

Following this event we were pleased to receive compliments from members of the public including this extract from an email.

I wanted to let you know that [your students] behaviour was a credit to your school and the teachers who had taken them away. I’ll hope you’ll pass on my compliments to the boys and encourage them that their politeness and well manners did not go unnoticed.

Mr McConnell has written a full report on the championships which you can read at this link.

Excellent Work

Two examples of Excellent Work today both with the title ‘Discrimination in Sport’.

Ms Walker has submitted a poem written by Oliver Lee 7C from Challenge Week when students were taking part in an Amnesty International project called ‘Words that Burn’.
Racism in Sport – Ollie Lee 7C

Racism in sport is happening,
Dealing with it is challenging,
Let’s go with football to start,
Racism even happens in darts.

It happens to many people, I can’t believe it,
If I was in that position I would quit.

You may know Balotelli, most people do,
People hurt him through and through,
You may also know Ian Wright,
He was bullied by the fans day and night,
He played for Arsenal, a top league team,
That was his ultimate dream,
His dream came true, which was fantastic,
But people treated him like a piece of plastic.

There was another person called Andy Cole,
People were telling him to die in a hole.
Another footballer called Wesley Brown,
People really did make him frown.

There is a campaign called Kick It Out,
Racism will stop now, I have no doubt.

This poem is written by Ollie Lee,
Don’t bully people, just let them be.

Mrs Green has sent this example by James Roberts and Theo Pryke-Stancer both 9N from the CORE RE topic on Prejudice and Discrimination.
