8 January 2016

We’ve had a very busy return to school this week.
On Tuesday we were trending on Twitter as two of our student digital leaders, Yasin Soliman and Alfie Carlisle, led a national online chat in the build up to this year’s education technology show (BETT).

Here are some of the positive comments we received following the online event.

  • Thank you to our brilliant hosts @DHSBDigitalLdrs @dhsboys & @Danjjroberts
  • Thanks to @DHSBDigitalLdrs and @Danjjroberts for a hosting a great #bettchat today
  • Well done team! Setting a very high benchmark for others to try to follow
  • Thanks to @DHSBDigitalLdrs & @Danjjroberts for hosting a fab discussion – our first DL led

We will also have a significant presence at the London show (21 – 22 January) as Alfie has been invited to present his future vision of technology in schools.

In addition, two Sixth Form students, Begum Whitehead and Murray King, will join a panel discussing higher education, and Mr Forte will be talking about the development of the Learning Commons.

Fundraising

I’d like to commend an individual student today for his fundraising efforts.

Jack Boltwood 10N arranged a raffle and raised a total of £87.20 for Cann Bridge, a Plymouth Special School. The money will be used to extend the students’ outdoor learning opportunities.

Jack says he’s going to raise further funds for the school and students this year.

DHSB Challenge

This morning Year 7 students took part in a special assembly celebrating the DHSB Challenge transition project.

Three students from each House were recognised for their achievements with Alastair Stone 7S taking the overall award.

Mr Martin, Director of Transitions, said, “The standard of work in the DHSB Challenge this year was exceptional.”

Where Are They Now

I was delighted to hear from two former students this week.

Harrison Nash is due to be presented with the prestigious British Citizens Award in recognition of his work in founding the charity Maranatha Care Children.

Harrison, who qualified in Social Work at Plymouth University, has helped vulnerable children in South Africa over an eight year period.
