Maintaining High Standards of Academic and Sporting Achievement

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Headmaster Dr N M PettitSince 1896 Devonport High School for Boys has provided an opportunity for able boys from Plymouth, SW Devon and SE Cornwall to pursue a broad academic curriculum in an atmosphere that encourages and rewards success.

As a Foundation School the Governing Body is responsible for the budget, site and admissions policy. The Governors are committed to developing the school while maintaining it as a grammar school with pupils being selected on the basis of academic aptitude, without regard to means or background.

In 2002 we were delighted to be designated by the DfES as one of the first four Specialist Engineering Colleges in the country. The extra funding for our specialist status is helping to raise standards throughout the school and has provided new facilities and courses in maths, science, technology and systems engineering.

Four years on, we were delighted to be judged by the DCSF as a "High Performing Specialist School" and encouraged to take on a second specialism. From 2007, as a Languages Specialist School, we are committed to raising the profile of an already successful faculty, building on our foundation in Classics, French and German by adding Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. We will have smaller classes and pilot fast-track GCSE courses to better hold the attention of the boys, in parallel to developing the use of the Internet to encourage International friendships. The Lycee de Garcons de Devonport: Centre d'Etude International will play a prominent role in this work. This work will be further supported by a European Union funded Comenius Project.

We provide a disciplined, well structured and happy environment in which our pupils work hard and play hard to achieve levels of excellence that reflect their potential and our expectations. All pupils wear uniform and are encouraged to show courtesy and respect to others - themes that are central to the school ethos.

Devonport Highscool For Boys LogoThroughout the school there is an emphasis on the development of personal qualities, on the widening of pupil's horizons, and on preparation for a purposeful and caring role in society. At 18 our leavers are well qualified for entry to the University course or career of their choice.

The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities including competitive sport, drama, music, community service and expeditions in the UK and overseas. All boys are in one of four houses and this gives further opportunity for representative sport and other competition, all of which contribute to the House Point tally that leads to the annual award of the St Levan Shield.

The boys tell me that attending Devonport High School for Boys is interesting, challenging and fun ......my staff and I work hard to maintain that tradition.

Dr N M Pettit
