| THE MAIN
EVENTS OF THE SUMMER TERM
Up to 400 pupils, including all our Year 7 pupils, go to Brittany
during the summer term. During their one week stay they live
the French way, practice the language, explore the local villages
and countryside, complete projects and take part in a variety
of physical activities including orienteering, canoeing nd
horse riding. Many boys will return to Uzel on other occasions
as they go up through the school, including sixth form trips
for field work and work experience.
Other foreign trips are organised each year,
such as visits to Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy,Russia, Kenya,
the regular Music Tour, geography trips, History trips, Skiing,
sports tours and, biannually, a demanding overseas expedition.
Back in Plymouth many departments take advantage of the long
summer days to complete field work assignments in Plymouth,
at the coast and out on Dartmoor. Year 9 boys, having completed
their Key Stage 3 SATs, take part in a Careers Competition
which is judged by parents and local employers and, as an
element of the Expressive Arts course, provide an evening
of entertainment.

Cricket, Tennis and Athletics are the main summer
sports. The Ten Tors teams go out on to Dartmoor to compete
in the long-distance challenge event. The July Sports Day
gives a chance to celebrate the
different skills of our young track and field athletes. Year
12 Duke of Edinburgh Award participants tackle their 50 mile
Gold Expedition in Cumbria or Yorkshire.
In late May and June Year 11, 12 & 13
students sit their GCSEs, AS and A levels, the school is calm
and the sun shines on the boys as they enjoy the 23 acres
of sports fields. Year 12 are busy as they visit
Universities and prepare for their UCAS application
ready for September. In June, whilst Y10 take exams, we organise
an Enrichment Week for the boys in Y7, Y8 and Y9, with
trips to art galleries, museums and lectures and, in
school, interesting subject days and sporting
challenges when visitors help staff to provide
memorable experiences.

SPORT AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Many clubs and sports are available with
at lunch
time, after school or at the weekends, to enrich the
opportunities for the boys. We give emphasis to
achieving a high standard in these activities, all of
which benefit from support from the Voluntary School Fund
that parents are asked to contribute each year. Major School
Drama productions and musical presentations are undertaken
each year - recent shows have included Chess, South Pacific,
Orpheus in the Underworld, West Side Story, Patience, The
Tempest and Ahmal and the Night Visitors.
Pupils have represented the city, county,
region
and country in a range of sports including Athletics,
Basketball, Football, Rugby, Cross-Country, Fencing, Judo
and Waterpolo or have been selected for training with National
Bodies. Our school teams continue to have considerable success
in local sporting competitions.
Other activities include Art, British Association
of
Young Scientists, Business Games, Chess, Computing, Debating,
Design, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Electronics,
French, Green Club, History, Library, School’s Challenge,
Young Consumers, Local History, Public Speaking, Ten Tors,
Textiles and Winter Mountaineering,. Many sixth formers are
involved in Young Enterprise.

PARENT-TEACHER AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION
All parents are members of this Association.
The
Association helps the school by helping at school
events, and by organising social and information
evenings for parents. They also help the school by
raising money to provide valuable additional facilities: recent
appeals have supported the Sports Hall, a new Minibus and
extra facilities for the new Edgcumbe Library. There are two
to three meetings per term and parents are encouraged to attend.
In order to continue to offer a wide range of educational
and extracurricular opportunities we ask all parents to support
the work of the PTFA and the school in any way they can. |
