Physics
The American Institute of Physics describes Physics as ‘an organised way of having a conversation with nature’. At DHSB, the Physics Department aims to equip students with the skills needed to ask difficult questions of nature and feel confident that they will find an answer.
Through scientific investigation, modelling, applied mathematics and a focus on contemporary physics, we give students the tools and support needed for them to test independently their ideas and share their findings.
Einstein said ‘to raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advances in science’. This approach is fostered at DHSB with a number of vibrant student-led initiatives. One project this year is bidding for time on the Large Hadron Collider to test whether or not the future can determine the past. Student-led talks in the physics society and the student-led projects on modelling real life situations through coding are just two of the regular events that take place each week.
By encouraging creativity and teamwork, students are given the opportunity to step outside the constraints of the curriculum and together with our annual trips to CERN, are able to leave with a lifelong passion for physics and an understanding that ‘the important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.’
