16 November 2018

Following last week’s special Head’s Blog highlighting our school community’s response to Armistice Day 2018 I’d like to share with you a photo of the students who took part in the ‘Ringing for Peace’ national commemoration.

I will also profile some individual student achievements.

Mrs Williams said, “The students rang between 7.00pm and 7.30pm to commemorate the centenary of Armistice Day. Addison Grigg was sadly unable to join us”.

John Steere, on behalf of the bellringers, added, “We were very pleased to welcome five of your students to join us on the evening of 11 November. They took part in the ‘Ringing for Peace’ national celebration of the Armistice Centenary. They were well supported by parents, grandparents and siblings! We look forward to those students’ and others’ continuing interest in developing their ringing skills and fostering links between your school and the church”.

UK Youth Parliament National Debate

As part of his duties as the elected Member of Youth Parliament for Plymouth, Sam Cade was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to sit in the House of Commons and debate the five topics that over 1.1 million young people across the UK voted for, including over 1,000 students from DHSB.

Sam said, “Over the course of the day we debated subjects such as ‘Votes at 16’, ‘Putting an end to Knife Crime’ and ‘Ending Youth Homelessness’, leading to a vote where over 300 MYP’s voted for ‘Votes at 16’ and ‘Ending Knife Crime’ as the two topics that the UK Youth Parliament will campaign for over the next year. It was a truly unique experience and an honour to be able to represent the young people of Plymouth and DHSB.”

Hosting the Diana Awards

In July Aled Griffiths was invited to co-host the Diana Award Midlands 2018 awards ceremony. This ceremony was to award young people who had gone beyond the expectations and have helped their community in one way or another. Aled said he felt honoured to be invited to co-host.

He added, “It was lots of fun and it was amazing to meet so many inspirational young people”.

Creative Jam

Over the last half term Schaefer Mann participated in the Creative Jam at Plymouth School of Creative Arts, sponsored by Atlantic Youth Creative Hubs.

The object of the Jam was to learn skills for creative social enterprise. Schaefer was part of a team which worked on a project called Football Family and built a VR living room for people to watch football with their friends. The project was one of two to receive an award at the event. The award the team received was ‘most investable idea’.

Schaefer learned how to program within the unreal engine during the two day event and presented most of the information himself in a very professional way.

Staff News

The Cornish Marathon starts in Pensilva (near Liskeard) and runs 26.2 miles past Golitha falls, alongside Colliford lake and up to Jamaica Inn before heading down the Drains valley to finish back in Pensilva. It’s a scenic, but very hilly course that has proved popular for over 20 years.

Congratulations to Mr Alsop who finished in second place in 2 hours 44 minutes and 59 seconds. He has qualified for the British Marathon Championships and will get to start one row behind the best in the world at next year’s London Marathon.
