20 July 2016

It was a high-flying end to the term today when we received a special visit from an Apache helicopter and crew.

All students were able to view the landing and then those interested in a career with the armed forces or in engineering were able to meet the crew to find out more.

This was the perfect introduction to the rest of the day which included celebration House assemblies and our whole school assembly when we were able to reflect on the year and look forward to the future.

Going for Silver

Well done to the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award group of students who completed their expedition on Exmoor in very hot conditions. Mrs Lilley said they were all a credit to the school.

Romeo and Juliet – a modern twist

There’s lots of useful information available in my Blog this week, beginning with an interesting take on the story of Romeo and Juliet from Thinkuknow (Child Exploitation and Online Protection CEOP).

This is part of a brand new public awareness campaign. Through social media, articles, blogs, films and more, CEOP want to get parents and carers thinking and talking about the importance of discussing sex, relationships and the internet with their children.

This short film ‘The world changes. Children don’t’ tells the age-old story of Romeo and Juliet… with a modern twist. It shows how the lives of these young lovers might play out online today, including the Lark ‘tweeting’ and Romeo ‘friending’ Juliet.

Sutton Trust US University Programme

Congratulations to Tommy O’Donnell who has won a place at Grinnell College on the Sutton Trust US University Programme.

Last summer, Tommy was one of 150 students selected for a summer school in the US and he benefited from an intensive programme of support administered through the US-UK Fulbright Commission. This included help with applications, college choices and admissions tests.

He said, “I am extremely excited to begin studying in the USA. As I am unsure about my future career path gaining a liberal arts education in the US will allow me to keep a number of different options open and learn a much wider variety of subjects”.

We wish Tommy every success.
