Every week we publish the blog and then sit back and marvel at the number of impressive events and achievements of our students.

They excel in so many disciplines and reading the Head’s Blog is such an uplifting start to the weekend.

The BETT Show 2015 has been taking place at ExCeL London this week and once again it is fantastic to see our students and staff featuring in a diverse range of activities.

On Wednesday Jonathan Dunn 11W spoke in the main theatre about ‘Inspiring a Generation of Thinkers’.

Before he left for London Jonathan said, “I plan to talk about a project I’m involved in called Thinkspace. A space in schools where students give up their free time to learn to code. I hope to inspire other schools to set up their own Thinkspace.”

Also on Wednesday Sixth Form student Kamran Malik took part in a panel with the title ‘Future-proofing your university: Meeting the next generation of student expectations’.

Mr Roberts was in the main theatre on Thursday presenting on ‘Student Leadership of Technology’.

He said, “We presented examples of young students using technology in innovative and creative ways to make a positive impact on not just the school community but the wider global community. We also showcased examples of student voice and student leadership.”

UK Youth Parliament

The UK Youth Parliament is all about giving young people a voice in the political world that they would never otherwise have had writes Tom Cahill.

There are 600 Members of Youth Parliament across the country, two of which are Plymouth’s elected Members; each working side by side for a year-long term to represent young people.

This year’s Youth Parliament election begins at the start of next week and offers students the best possible opportunity to ‘make their mark’ on how they want to be represented in Plymouth’s political scene.

Because of this, Mr. Earley has kindly allowed DHSB’s two election hopefuls (Josh Pope and Tom Cahill) a space to put forward our different cases for election. At this point I would like to point out that voters get two votes each.

The Outdoor Classroom

Our Environmental Group recently visited two local schools where an outdoor classroom project is in progress. The aim of the environmental group is to raise awareness and nurture a lost connection between people in our community and nature, and provide a hands-on experience of positive collaborative action to better our local environment and discover the transformative power of a local community action

An outdoor classroom is a fantastic space to explore the Science of Ecosystems, perform outdoor drama plays, create art by using and being inspired by natural elements, look at how people use and manipulate a geographical landscape for different uses (sustainable and non sustainable), recreate events and daily life of different historical periods and much more.

Indoor Cricket

Very well done to our U13 Indoor Cricket team who took third place at the Devon Finals this week.

Mr Bunney said, “A great day of cricket – played five and won four!”

Badminton

Badminton is very strong at DHSB.

Congratulations to our U16 team who scooped the Plymouth title at the recent schools’ league.

The team will now represent Plymouth at the Devon Championships in Okehampton on 11 February.

Toby Leung 8E took to the national stage at the U13 gold national badminton tournament held in Shropshire.

Toby won gold in the boys’ doubles and bronze in the mixed doubles.

Here he is pictured with his partners Christian from Oxfordshire and Pamela from Buckinghamshire.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to James O’Sullivan 9W and Jack Firth 10N for representing the West of England in the U16 National Indoor Hockey Finals.

The event was held in Wolverhampton last weekend.

Although the Marjons team missed out on a place in the final they played well against teams from North, South and East England and the Midlands.

It was a great experience for all the players and both James and Jack are eligible for the same age group again next year. Well done to them.

DHSB students also represented the West in the U18 event held in Birmingham (Matt Smith and Rory Coles).

Well done to all those from DHSB playing for Plymouth in the National Indoor Finals.
