A range of outstanding achievements this week but all examples of our students’ drive to seize opportunities and push themselves to new levels at home and abroad.
This year saw the tenth anniversary of students from SW schools attending the Euroscola Day at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Schools represented this year included DHSB, DHSG, Callington Community College, Coombe Dean School, Hele’s School, Ivybridge Community College and Torquay Girls’ Grammar School.
Along with 500 young people from European Union member countries students discussed issues such as the environment, freedom of information, youth employment, migration and integration, and the future of Europe.
The experiences of learning about the EU, meeting many young people of other cultures and learning about career opportunities within Europe, can be life-changing.
During Euroscola Day two students Jacob Slater, DHSB, and Milly Atkinson, DHSG, had the opportunity to introduce in French the SW group to the audience in the hémicycle where the MEPs conduct their debates.
The event was watched, via a live stream, back here in school.
Many congratulations to Tommy O’Donnell who has just heard he has been selected to participate in the Sutton Trust US Programme 2015.
Tommy has been chosen as one of 150 students from an original pool of over 3,700 initial applications. The selection panel was ‘highly impressed by his suitability and commitment to the programme’.
Tommy will be travelling to the USA to attend the Yale Summer School in August.
He said, “I decided to apply after discovering how much support the programme offers to students looking to study in the United States from Alex [Waterhouse] in Year 13. I want to study across the pond because I am interested in the liberal arts curriculum which promotes the study of a wide range of classes which is very helpful to me as I enjoy all of my A level subjects and want to keep studying them all in the future.”
Congratulations to our Junior Maths Challenge team who took second place in the regional competition this week.
Ms Calley said, “I was so proud to work with this team of polite, courteous boys.”
Very well done to our Plymouth Half Marathon runners especially James Watt who came home as the first U21 to finish, with a time of 1:28.

Sixth Form students are leading two initiatives in the run-up to the 2015 General Election.
Year 12 students are leading a series of lunchtime debates and organising a whole-school mock election which will take place on polling day, 7 May.
Year 13 students arranged a well-attended question time style event this morning.
Chaired by Adam Drewery, members of the audience were able to share in debate with the party representatives on the panel.
Sports Update
Well done to our Year 10 and 11 teams who both won their age group in the Plymouth basketball league.
They were presented with their trophies last weekend at a Plymouth Raiders event.
This year’s cricket season started with a win for the U13s against Stover School.
A special mention to John Moon 8W who scored his maiden DHSB half century.
The 1st XI continue to go from strength to strength winning their Devon Wednesday League semi-final (George Lang competition) this week 4 – 2.
They’re waiting to hear who they will be playing in the final.
