Take every opportunity and get involved.
This was the key message given to students in Mr Berryman’s whole school assembly which included updates from Young Enterprise, our recent Erasmus Project and the school’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme programme.
Following on from this, Mr Berryman and Mr Carpenter hosted our Swedish partners in school yesterday. They discussed future Erasmus+ projects which will provide opportunities for staff and students to work together across Europe.
Well done to all students who have participated in these projects and also in a wide variety of extra and super-curricular opportunities at this school.
You can see Mr Berryman’s assembly slides here. They include some reminders about the start of the public exam season.
Pizza Making
Mr Riley is currently leading an after-school pizza making club and I called in last evening to see how the pizzas were progressing – they looked delicious and were very well made.
Students are preparing to make and sell their produce at the Summer Festival.
Last Weekend
13 Bronze and Silver DofE Award teams took part in their practice expeditions last weekend and Mr Huq reported that all completed the course and returned safely.
Last Saturday also saw another successful and enjoyable trip to Alton Towers Theme Park, organised by our PTFA. A huge thank you to them and to the staff who supported them.
The PTFA will be taking a coach to Bath tomorrow for their spring shopping trip (fully subscribed). We hope they travel safely and enjoy the day.
Excellent Work
Mrs Steer’s English class 7S is currently working on a module where students will publish a magazine about the values and ideals of DHSB and their Year 7 experiences (their audience is Year 5/6 students and their parents). Towards the end of the module, students will present their ideas in a pitch to be the magazine that gets chosen for publication.
Mrs Steers said, “I asked my class to create a mood board which would reflect institutional values, the articles to be included, aspects of life at DHSB, colours and font. This was intended to be conceptual rather than an actual mock-up of the magazine and links into the assessment criteria of structuring, organising and presenting texts in a variety of forms, both on paper and on the screen”.
Here are three excellent examples of the mood boards which were created by the class.

Excellent Work – KS5
Ms Davidson says the work of all students completing the Extended Project qualification (EPQ) this year has been outstanding, adding, “It is an absolute delight to learn about so many interesting subjects from our students”.
Topics this year include the blockchain, subprime mortgage lending, the economic crash, Bob Dylan as a literary prize winner, the school production of The Tempest, a tool for predicting the stock market, future nuclear energy, bike building and variation in modern German language.

Alumni News
Did you attend this school between 1988 and 2017 and have you collected your exam certificates yet? If not, then they could be in these boxes!
Karen Edwards, Exams Officer, is on a mission to reunite as many certificates with their owners as she can.
She said “When students leave school I don’t think they realise the importance of their certificates until they apply for a job or a course and the employer or provider asks to see them. This could be many years after they have left school. Certificates can be very expensive to replace, approximately £40 each, so it is important that the originals are given to their rightful owner”.
If you think your certificates may be in school then please contact Mrs Edwards at karen.edwards@dhsb.org

The U13 team played extremely well at the regional finals this week. There were fine margins and they lost 1 – 0 to the eventual winners.
