School Development Plan Update

eSafety Talk for Parents and Carers

Individual Achievements
Well done to Sam Gilbert who has achieved his ‘first dan’ black belt in martial arts. The grading for this is by panel and takes place over a full day. It includes a full two hour work-out prior to the actual grading, followed by sparring and board breaking. The panel marked Sam as an A student which means that he performed better than the level expected for a successful grading.
Well done also to Edward Fox who represented DHSB in the British Modern Biathlon Schools Championship at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace earlier in March and came 16th in the boys U16 year age group.
Fundraising News
Former student Harrison Nash was in school last week to tell us more about Maranatha Care Children, the charity he founded in South Africa.
Toby Leung and the Sixth Form prefects were able to present £260 to the charity; funds which have been raised through donations for refreshments at after school events such as parents evenings.
Toby is also leading on the DHSB One Tree Planted project.
He said, “Deforestation has devastating effects on wildlife, survival of animals, ecosystems and causes global warming. This is why we have joined the School Tree Challenge in support of reforestation efforts around the world. For every 77p we raise, one tree will be planted”.
This week the One Tree Planted Team came together to plant a Liquidambar Styraciflua Worplesdon tree on the school site. Our ‘wear green’ mufti day on Thursday supported this appeal and you can read more about the fundraising details at this link.
Ten Tors Training
Well after five training sessions now done it was about time our Ten Tors teams had some good fortune with the weather and so it was with fantastic conditions and visibility as far as you could see writes Mr Clifford. Teams were already working hard as they ascended the first tor of the day at Bellever.
Towards the end of the day a team came across an elderly lady who was lost and disorientated. She was well looked after by all and reunited with her vehicle. Well done to all for your compassion and community spirit to those in need of help and assistance.
Excellent Work
Today’s examples of excellent work are from Mrs Boon who said, “These images are of the risottos my Year 9 class made this week. The brief was about adapting meals for special dietary needs (lacto-ovo vegetarian or vegan) and I think they did a fantastic job”.
Mrs Boon names one student as Star Chef for each practical lesson and this time the award was given to James Roberts in 9N.

Sports Update
Football
Many congratulations to our Year 7 team who are Plymouth Champions after beating All Saints in the final yesterday. I believe the final score was 4 – 0. Well done all!
Rosslyn Park National Sevens
Three teams competed in some close matches against very strong teams on the national stage at the Rosslyn Park National Sevens tournament this week.
It was a fantastic experience for all involved. Well done!

Cross Country
Congratulations to the DHSB Cross Country team who competed in the Plymouth Schools Sports Partnership races held at Eggbuckland School this week. The Year 7 team won their race and the Year 8/9 team finished a close second.
Mr Carpenter said there were, “Excellent performances from all”.
