Each Friday I share our theme of the week to give an opportunity for you to discuss this at home as a family with your child.
This week our theme is ‘developing a growth mindset’ and this was explored in our whole school assembly led by Mr Martin on Wednesday.
Mr Martin said, “The first part of the assembly considered the concept of the ‘half full, half empty glass of water’ and how each of us react to situations, challenges and problems in relation to this idea. This part of the assembly concluded with a story entitled ’the pencil's tale’ and the important lessons from this are included on a slide in my presentation”.
Mrs Edwards also delivered two presentations to students, firstly on the new arrangements for the use of personal devices in lesson time and in social time (following the recent consultation with staff, students and parents) and secondly on recent government advice concerning the Coronavirus.
UK Maths Team Challenge – Winners!
Very well done to our team who competed against 15 other schools this week and won the regional team maths challenge. Students involved are Sam Hibbert 9N, Ayush Kunwar 9S, Asad Ali 8E and Talha Durrani 8W.
Ms Wills said, “The team performed impressively and have been invited to take part in the national final in London in June”.
Congratulations!
National Careers Week
Students have enjoyed a range of activities during National Careers Week with teachers linking to different careers and employment opportunities in their subject lessons. This morning Ms Moreton arranged for 27 visitors from 13 different career areas to lead sessions for just under 360 Year 10 and Year 11 students. Another 100 students from the Sixth Form attended sessions later in the morning.
There will be a full write-up on Ms Moreton’s Blog at this link (published on Monday each week).
Students of the Week
Each week we recognise a student as ‘student of the week’. You can see from our most recent list that a wide variety of reasons can be recognised when staff make their nominations. I enjoyed lunch with this group last Friday.
Adam Samuel 9N for his outstanding performance in the year 9 National Cup football fixture against St Peter’s School.
Finlay Marsh 8P for being incredibly resilient when playing in goal for the Year 8 Football team.
George Cleeland-Smith 9E for his extremely helpful and willing attitude with supporting IT facilities for PSHE and assemblies.
Lalit Kathiresan 6RWO for his superb support of another student academically over many months.
Climate Change Campaign
Ms Walker expressed her thanks to MP Luke Pollard today for taking the time to send these 'lovely letters' to the Year 8 students who took part in Cafod's ‘be a zero hero’ climate change campaign in curriculum challenge week.
Ten Tors
Thank you to Mr Clifford for this report.
DHSB Ten Tors teams braved some of Dartmoor’s extreme weather conditions all in one day on St David’s Day. Dartmoor currently resembles a real-life sponge but on training walk three in the northern section of the Moor our 35/45 mile team had to contend with hail, rain and sunshine. Not to be missed was also driving snow and sleet plummeting temperatures to -10 degrees with wind chill. Both teams did themselves proud with some dogged determination and resilient mindset in some very testing conditions.
Sports Update
Hockey
The U18 Hockey team gave a good account of themselves but unfortunately came up short losing 3 -0 to Mount Kelly School.
Well done to the U13 Hockey team for a joint third place finish in the England Hockey county finals. The team endured wind, rain, hail and snow and played well throughout.
Football
The Year 7 A football team got off to a great start at the Plymouth Schools central venue league with three wins in three games.
The Year 7 B team played in a football tournament against Plymouth College.
Mr Bunney said, “It’s great to give more keen footballers a chance to play for the school. Also great is the rare blue sky in the background”.
A good result for the U15 team this week. The team is through to the next round of the Plymouth Cup after a good win against Tor Bridge High School.
The 2nd XI lost their match against the Discovery College 5 - 1 to Discovery College in the Devon Wednesday League.
Mr Orkney said, “Disappointingly the opposition spoilt the game with their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th goals”.
In contrast it was a ‘fantastic win’ for the A team who beat Plymouth University Students Union A team 4 - 2 in the same Wednesday competition.
