I hope everyone has made the transition from an action packed CCW and is ready to work hard for the last few weeks until Christmas.
This blog was written by Logan Rossiter 11S as l have taken over the role of Headteacher today.
Several students replaced teachers in order to see into the world of running a successful school. I wish to thank all the staff I have met with today, those being ‘taken over’ and all those who have made the day a success.
Our theme for this week and beyond is kindness, an important attribute expressed most prominently during the festive season. Students are encouraged to show extra kindness and humility, integrity and respect through the introduction of DHSB’s kindness advent calendar and our new Christmas charity week. Little acts of kindness can be huge when seen from someone else’s perspective.
Edison have been spreading the Christmas spirit through their charity food collection and stocking filler donations. Remember that donations are always welcomed however late.
I ask you all to take part in the charity fundraisers happening next week and make an extra effort to be generous and indulge in the plethora of charity endeavours. You need not be austere when it comes to charity!
Sports Update
I wish to congratulate the Year 9 football team in their success. They have progressed to the fifth round of the national cup following an amazing 4 – 0 win over Torquay Boys Grammar School.
Also well done to the Year 7 students who have had their first taste of Basketball at the Plymouth schools central venue competition this week.
I also wish to congratulate the Year 10 football team who have made it to the fifth round of the National Cup after a great 4 – 2 victory. It reminds us of the importance of staying active and health, mentally and physically in the colder and darker months of the annum.
Year 11 Curriculum Evening
The success of the Year 11 Sixth Form evening was down to the work of teachers and staff who gave up their free time to show their care and passion for further education. I hope the evening was not in vain and allowed questions to be answered and decisions informed.
Learning Commons
There are some exciting developments in the Learning Commons with the ongoing success of their Makerspace fundraiser. As a school we believe in the benefits of Maker culture, promoting entrepreneurship and hands on design skills in the 21st century, for all our students, not just those interested in STEM.
On behalf of the whole school and especially the Learning Commons staff and students involved I wish to thank all those who became patrons to this exciting development.
Christmas Card
On Friday, I had the privilege to meet with the winners of the annual Christmas card competition, and to explain what a privilege it is to have your artwork be the face of the school.
Many thanks to all those who entered , but congratulations to Archie Chalk, Samuel Coates and Solly Hunter, the winners of this year’s competition.
Excellent Work
Mrs Steer’s Year 7 English group 7W were challenged to create a poster illustrating some of the books written by Charles Dickens, as they are currently studying ‘A Christmas Carol’.
Students were tasked to produce it with a mixture of lettering, images and colour.
Four students from 7W who produced exceptional posters will have their work on display in B28. They are: Ben Wagstaff, Matthew Rubery, Thomas Mullaney and James Delbridge who all took different approaches to the task using interesting and imaginative content. Well done to these boys.

Several Year 7 Geography students have submitted excellent entries to the ‘My Favourite Place’ competition and looking at the short list I can tell that the entries were of very high quality. It was very difficult to choose but the winners are as follows: Kai Watson 7E, Seth Stevens 7C and Laurie Thomson 7C.
Well done to all who entered and all who were shortlisted. Mr Roberts will feature their work next week.
Future Events
Next week, on 12 December, we see the advent of Speech Day. I hope you all can make it to congratulate the worthy prize winners.
We also have the Year 7 Carol Service, which I urge all parents, carers and supporters to come to. This will be held at St Andrew’s Church at 7.00pm on Monday 19 December.
Please note that the last day of school, Friday 21 December, ends at the usual time of 15.20.
