What are you doing now?
I am a R&D engineer for II-VI Photonics, a company that makes lasers for use in the telecoms industry.
What route did you take up to this point?
I left DHSB having successfully completed my A levels and went on to study Physics (inspired by four years of Mr Proctor’s teaching- thanks!) at the University of Southampton. I became enthralled with optics and photonics and the course provided a wide scope of options to pursue these subjects.
In May 2014 I graduated with a 2:1 Master of Physics. After a summer spent relaxing and working briefly in transport planning, I was contacted by II-VI through a recruitment agency and have been working for them since October.
What have you learnt most about yourself?
I can get a degree in physics but I can’t tell my left from my right.
What words of wisdom would you give to a student joining DHSB in Year 7?
You have been given a fantastic opportunity to learn in an environment which promotes excellence and achievement. Appreciate it and use it to your advantage.
And for a Sixth Former leaving DHSB?
You don’t have to go to university to be successful. When opportunity knocks, open the door.
Any fond memories of school you can share?
Too many! Mr. Riggs’ trip to China tops it I think- an amazing experience. I made some great friends.
